Maybe you didn't realize, but homes have been better designed to help make the transition to retirement much easier for older adults. Whether it's eliminating steps up to the front door, or leveling the main living space so there are unnecessary steps going from one room to the next (see sunken living room), builders are more cognizant of the owners needs as they get older.
